![]() ![]() If you’ve ever noticed a wolf’s eyes glowing at night, you’re not alone. Wolves, however, are also very good at detecting motion and movement, which they can do at much farther distances. ![]() This number is highly dependent on wolves’ age and health. It’s unknown how this changes at night, but it’s believed that it decreases a bit to around 50 feet. Wolves have an average vision of 75 feet before things start to get blurry. This enables them to navigate well when hunting or searching for food. ![]() It’s estimated to be between several times better than that of humans, as well as other animals. Wolves have excellent vision in low lighting conditions. The wolves’ superior night vision is a result of the combination of the high density of rods and tapetum lucidum. The Tapetum Lucidum serves as a mirror to reflect light back through the retina. The small amount of light available is bounced back from the wolf’s eyes. This is also why wolves’ eyes shine at night. The tapetum lucidum helps refract light through it so that wolves can see clearly in darkness. The Tapetum Lucidum is a layer of tissue behind the retina. Rods are photoreceptor cells that provide vision in low-light conditions. Wolves also have an increased number of rod cells in their eyes compared to other animals. The reflective property of the tapetum lucidum bounces incoming light back through their retina to make images more clear in dim lighting. This is a shiny, reflective surface that lines wolves’ eyes and helps them see better in low light conditions like at night or on dark cloudy days. Wolves have an extra layer of tissue called the tapetum lucidum. The reason why wolves are able to see well in the dark has a lot to do with their eyes. They are excellent dispersers of the Cerrado fruits. They often hunt at night because it is easier to catch prey in darkness and wolves can use moonlight to see better. Maned wolves also prey on small to medium-sized animals, including armadillos, birds, rodents, and frogs. Much of their diet includes fruits from the Brazilian Savanna, such as the fruit of the wolf-apple, known as “lobeira” in Brazil. Maned Wolf pups weigh about 450 g at birth, and have black fur. Their long legs also enable them to jump when hunting prey in the Brazilian Savanna.īreeding season typically occurs between March and July, with a two-month (65 days) gestation period resulting in a litter size up to 6 pups. Maned wolves have lanky, skinny legs which allow them to negotiate steep terrain. The situation gets flipped on its head during the dry season, as major temperatures drop occurs at night, and maned wolves are most active around the hottest hours of the day. Maned wolves use scent marking to advertise their territory, and they also emit roar barks to warn intruders.ĭuring the wet season, maned wolves exhibit nocturnal behavior, but are capable to shift towards increased diurnal behavior during heavy rainfalls. ![]() Maned wolves are solitary, shy creatures, their territories can be as large as 30,000 acres (123 square kilometers). The species is now considered to be Near Threatened by the IUCN, and is also considered to be Vulnerable by the Brazilian government (IBAMA). Over the last decade, the Maned Wolf has experienced habitat destruction, road kills, human persecution, and dog-related infectious diseases. The largest known population is in Brazil, which holds over 90 percent of the current population. Estimates suggest that potentially 17,000 mature individuals remain in the wild. The Maned Wolf inhabits the Cerrado, a type of habitat only existing in South America, and where can be found a mixture of grasslands and scrublands. The name Maned Wolf has probably a nicer ring, and also refers to its mane. This mammal was given a different name in English though. The Maned Wolf’s original name is “Lobo Guará”, which means Red Wolf in Tupi-Guarani. It is monotypic, meaning it is the only species representative of the genus Chrysocyon. The Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest of all South America canids. ![]()
